Friday, December 5th, 2008 - We have a 8:00 excursion to West Point Island. A private island owned by Roddy and Lilly Napier.

We had a dock to land on, which I thought was great, we didn’t have to get wet!

Our guide Shane introduced us to Lilly Napier, they had trucks for those that didn’t want to walk to the bird colony.

The walk was about a mile to the other side of the island.

There were lots of birds flying around and foraging on the ground.

On the other side of the island we arrived at the bird colony, the albatross build nests of mud to lay their eggs.

On the return walk Roddy and Lilly Napier, the owners of the island, offered us tea and cakes. They say Roddy never leaves the island and only left to attend school, he’s over 80 and has lived his whole life on the island. The Union Jack was proudly flying in the front of the house.

I think Ron was ready to return to the boat.
During lunch we cruised to Carcass Island for an afternoon landing.

One of our guides, Shanti, our biologist, explains the local habitat and what we can expect to see.

They had burrowing penguins that have their nest underground.

We had a nice 3 kilometer hike to Rob and Lorraine McGuill’s, the owner of Carcass Island. There they served us more tea and cakes.
