"Death and his Friend the Cat" ❤

Death walked silently along the paths of the world. As he passed, the trees seemed to lose color, and the wind became a sad whisper. No one stopped to look at him, and those who did, did so too late. He had always worked alone, gathering souls on his eternal journey, but loneliness was a constant that began to weigh on him.
One dark night, as he glided through the streets of a silent city, he heard a soft meow. It was a cat, black as night, sitting on a low roof, looking at him with eyes that shone in the gloom. Death stopped, something he rarely did, intrigued by the animal's calmness. Most living things avoided his gaze, but the cat watched him with a serenity that was strange to him.

"Why don't you fear me?" he asked.

The cat stretched slowly, without looking away.

"Why should I fear you?" The cat replied, in a soft, slow voice. I've seen you pass by so many times... in the shadows, in the sighs left by those who departed. You are part of life, just like the sun that rises every day and the stars that shine at night.

Death did not expect such a wise answer. In his experience, everyone feared him. However, this little being seemed to understand something that many others couldn't.

"Do you want to accompany me?" He asked, feeling a strange curiosity.
The cat jumped from the roof and, with soft, stealthy steps, approached his side. From that night on, they became inseparable companions. While Death did his job, the cat followed him, observing everything with its bright eyes. In every home Death went to, the cat entered first, moving through the shadows, caressing the legs of those who were about to leave, offering them one last dose of calm before the inevitable end.

Over time, Death began to see his task from a new perspective. The cat, with its silence and constant presence, showed him the beauty that existed in the small moments, in the serene farewells and in the last breaths of those who were leaving. Not everyone was afraid of dying; some, exhausted by pain or sadness, received it with relief. The cat made sure they weren't alone in those moments.

Once, Death asked the cat why he had decided to follow him.

"Because you're alone too," the cat replied, looking at him with his wise eyes. And, even if everyone fears you, someone must walk with you. Everyone deserves a friend, even you.

Death had never thought of it. He had accepted his fate as inevitable, without questioning the weight of his burden. But now, with the cat by his side, his walk had become less heavy. He hadn't changed his work, but his perspective was different.

Over the years, they continued their journey, and Death no longer felt the same loneliness. He had always been between life and death, but now he understood that there could be something more to his existence as well. The cat, with its silent companionship, had shown him that, even in the darkest moments, there could always be a ray of light, an unexpected companionship.

And so, Death and his friend the cat continued to walk together, until the end of time.

A small fable that represents the connection that exists between kittens and the afterlife. ❤
