New York is 10 times more in everything!  10x the energy of anywhere else, 10x the dazzle of anywhere else, 10x the people of anywhere else, it’s just so WOW WOW WOW!  I can see why it’s one of the greatest cities in the world.

These were some of those full sized dynorama scenes with real stuffed animals,
I always find these displays disturbingly creepy!

This is a full sized blue whale hanging from the ceiling by just a single point near the tail, even if it’s fiberglass it must weigh tons, I couldn’t figure out how they got it balanced so perfectly and how it didn’t collapse the ceiling.

A cool building!

Happy hour day 8!

I saw an advertisement for Angela Lansbury in a Noel Coward play, "Blithe Spirit".  Angela Lansbury is an icon of Broadway and I wanted to see her in a live performance, and the fact that it was a Noel Coward play, I couldn't believe my luck.  We went to the box office and there was a flaming queen selling the tickets, I told him in a delighted voice, "I can't believe I'm going to see Angela Lansbury live, she's a Broadway legend!"  He made a gesture with his hand, waving it around in the air and said, "She's a real trouper, she's NEVER missed a performance, she brings her lunch in herself and eats with the crew!  She's real class.  Now, where would you like to sit?"  I told him, "Third row center would be amazing!"  And he said, "How about third row isle?  Actually they're much better seats because you can beat the crowd to the bar during intermission!"  Great suggestion!

The show was amazing!  It also stared Rupert Everett who is an absolute giant of a man, he must be 6'6" and stunningly handsome.

The next day we went to the MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art.

There was an exhibit by an Argentine artist.

This statue is about 9 feet tall, awesome!

This was just a bunch of lint on the floor
with some standing mirrors placed around.
I love modern art, but there’s times when you just have to say, “That is just lint on the floor, that’s not art!”  Jajjaja!  I also wondered how you would move such a piece and reassemble it somewhere else.

Some cool 3D art, that’s a real refrigerator door, real 1/2 bottles of 7Up and product boxes and cans.

There were quite a few Warhol pieces, I didn’t realize when Warhol did the Campbell soup can piece, that there is one can for each flavor of Cambells that was available at the time, 28, each one is labeled with a different flavor.

These were in the functional industrial products section.

The building itself is a kind of modern art.  With interesting coves in the galleries,
with panes of glass that “frame” the architecture of neighboring surrounding buildings.

Trying to decide where to go next.

We decided to do the 3 hour ferry ride around Manhattan island.

The guide was excellent, pointing out historical buildings, landmarks and other interesting trivia.  What you realize about New York is that anyone who has ever been ANYONE has had something to do with New York.  Either living there, working there, performing there, being killed there (on our bus trip they pointed out the apartment building where John Lennon was shot and Yoko Ono still lives).  You really get the sense of New York as really being the heart of the country and a cultural center.

Walking home from the cruise, a torrential down pour started, so what is one to do, but rush into the closest bar for Happy Hour #9

I was getting a craving for Sushi so I asked the bartender for a recommendation.
She said she had no idea, she’s from Brooklyn!  However, she went back into the kitchen
to ask someone and she came back with a recommendation on  a place within walking distance.
We went home, got freshened up and then headed to the restaurant.

newyork-2009-ron-834 newyork-2009-pej-479

The restaurant was what you would expect from New York, young, hip, cool atmosphere, and beautiful waitresses.  The food came and I just had to take a photo before we tore into it.  I was really surprised in the reasonable prices in all the places we ate.  I guess the world economy is affecting everyone.  This whole plate of sushi was only $67, we paid more for that in California for something similar when we lived there over 9 years ago.

Our last day in New York we returned to Rockerfeller center to take a tour of the NBC studios.  That was pretty cool to see where Saturday Night Live has been filmed for 35 years.  Also all the photos and plaques on the wall of all the famous people who had worked there, for security reasons no cameras were allowed, hmmmmpth!

newyork-2009-pej-482

Rockerfeller Center is a really cool art deco building.

This cathedral is just across the street.

Cool art deco statue just as you leave one of the exits of Rockerfeller Center.

Another reason for the trip to New York was to celebrate Ron’s and my 27th anniversary.  An Argentine friend, Leo, lives in New York and we asked him to join us for dinner to celebrate our good fortune..

Next we head to Michigan to celebrate my niece and God child’s high school graduation!
